Tenpai Wangchuk(1855–1882), was the 8thPanchen LamaofTibet. ThePanchen Lamais the highest rankinglamaafter theDalai Lamain theGelugschool ofTibetan Buddhism, the lineage, which controlledwesternTibetfrom the16th century until the 1959 Tibetan uprising.

Panchen Lamas belong to a tulkureincarnation lineage — incarnations ofAmitābha(Great Scholar). Wangchuk ’s recognition as the 8th Panchen Lama was controversial. He was the first Panchen Lama to be identified by drawing a lot from theGolden Urn.Three years later he was enthroned in the Tashilhunpo Monastery.

Due mainly to the exile of the Dalai Lama there has been controversy about the selection of the 11th Panchen Lama. On 8 December 1995 six-year-old Gyaincain Norbu was selected andenthroned atTashilhunpo Monastery. The Dalai Lama’s selection/nomination,Gedhun Choekyi Nyima,is still being held for his self protection by the Chinese government.

In the Tobin family, Richard Tobin was born on 12/8/1857, to Richard (the father and lighthouse keeper) and Ellen Tobin (nee Etherington or Hetherington), who were married October 7, 1856 at the Congregational Chapel in PortAdelaide. Richard Tobin (the son) was the elder brother of my great grandfather,William Henry Tobin.
